Abedro” refers to the Akan name for wild eggplant, also known as turkey berry or pea eggplant, and is very rich in iron,  a common food source in Ghana, particularly the leaves and fruit.

    Introduced to West and Central Africa, South and Southeast Asia, China, and Australia. 

  • Uses:
    • Food: The fruit is eaten as a vegetable, either raw or cooked, and is becoming more popular as a cultivated crop. 
    • Rootstock: Used as a rootstock for eggplant (Solanum melongena) and tomatoes, conferring resistance to root pests and diseases. 
    • Medicinal: Traditionally used as an adjunct therapy for people with anemia in Ghana.
